Yellow's Day at the Track

Autocross at Triton College - September 26, 1999

My first autocross ever! After doing a few driver's ed events, I had some time this weekend and joined John for an autocross. This event was held at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois and was sponsored by Tri-State Sports Car Council. After a few cold days in Chicago, the weather was sunny and warm with temperatures around 80 degrees. There was a fairly strong wind from time to time from the south.

As this was my first event, I didn't do anything special to prepare. I used the same tire pressures that I use at track events and that seemed to work just fine. John had a white crayon so I marked my tires and found the pressure was just about right, but then again I didn't push the car as hard as I probably could have.

I took the first lap really slow. I watched the video afterwards and I looked like I taking a sunday drive! I did that one in 43.574. The next two runs I did at 41.946 and 40.075. I left before the final results were posted, but my last two runs were 39.843 and 39.797. I didn't hit a single cone all day so I think I was way too cautious and probably could have done quite a bit better.

I checked later and the Final Results were posted. They showed my best raw time was 39.797, and my index time was 32.315, which put me in 82nd place out of 106 overall, and 21st out of 33 in my class. Oh well, I'll do better next time.

John has done a few autocrosses in the last couple years. Plus, he also had slicks on, so it's no surprise he did very well. The last time I saw the standings, he was second in his class and most likely won a trophy. But then again, there were only 4 cars in his class. 8^)

His first three lap times were DNF, 38.675 and 38.704. His best lap was 37.782 and he finished 75th out of 106.
