I am not responsible for any problems you experience as a result of trying to do anything described here. The hack documented here worked fine for me but may not work for you far any number of reasons.Once I did a couple Driver's Ed events, I realized that I needed a way to time myself so I can find out if my changed in technique are doing any good as far as my lap time goes. I found that all serious drivers have a HotLap system installed in their cars. If you're not familiar with this system, it's basically a I/R receiver that you mount facing directly out the right side of the car and a display you mount on your dash that's easily visible while you're driving. The other thing you need is the matching I/R transmitter. You probably don't need to buy one and someone will usually bring one to event. I bought one anyway as I got to some low turnout events, which turned out to be good as once I was the only one to bring a transmitter, and another time I was the only one to bring a tripod to mount the transmitter on.
The receiver is easy to mount in a coupe if you have a harness bar. Targas and convertibles are a little trickier but doable. The display would normally velcro to the dash somewhere, but I wanted a display that could be easily removed without any visible signs of it ever being there.
I bought mine at Northstar Motorsports, but most racing supply shops should carry it as well.
My friend Jason bought a HotLap for his Boxster around the same time I bought mine and he showed me this cool bracket he made that would attach it to the Boxster center console. I experimented with a variation of his bracket and after one unsatisfactory bracket, I came up with this that seems to be functional and rugged enough to last quite some time. The first bracket I made held up fine on the race track, even though it needed a zip tie to hold it in place, but it broke when I accidentally hit it with my knee while getting out of the car. So, here is attempt number two.
Before building one yourself, you will need the following items:
