Greg's Dark Blue 911

Blackhawk Farms Raceway - September 16, 1999

This Driver's Education event at Blackhawk Farms was also sponsored by PCA Milwaukee. The weather was once again perfect and the turnout was once again low, only about 25-30 cars, so there was plenty of track time for everyone. This time there were only two run groups!

I used Pagid Orange pads on the front for the first time for a whole day. They gripped nicely, didn't fade, and best of all, were hardly worn at the end of the day.

The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. I am still trying to get a feel for the car. Since bad things happened the last two times I was at this track, I found myself really holding back. It is taking me a while to get the feel for this car. The Boxster was always rock solid stable and very forgiving of errors. This car is rock solid stable as long as I'm smooth, but get unstable the moment I do something wrong.

I spent most of the day just working on my heel-toe technique. Victor, my instructor this day, gave me some pointers which REALLY helped a lot. By the end of the day it was becoming quite natural. Once I got that down, my lap times started to decrease steadily. Unfortunately the day was just about over and I was feeling quite fatigued, so I didn't push myself very hard the last session.

The best lap time I could manage was only 1:39.64, but at least I was consistent and most of my lap times by the end of the day were in the 1:39 to 1:42 range. This is a difficult track and I know I have a quite a few things to work on here at future events. Jason managed a few very fast laps, his best being 1:32.64!

Although everything I needed fit into the trunk this time, I really need to consider a trailer for the future.

It's late in the day and we're packing up to go home.
Here is a very short video of me coming from corner 3A and into corner 4. I'm in the second 911 you see, the one with the big white box on the doors.

QuickTime Movie - Approx 880K
RealVideo - 56K modem or faster stream (9 seconds)

Here is some video with me taking a lap around the track. It's not one of my faster laps, but I seemed to stay pretty much on the line. I have no idea where those annoying beeps are from. Maybe my camcorder is starting to break.

QuickTime Movie - Approx 4.3M
RealVideo - 56K modem or faster stream (1 minute 45 seconds)

I really enjoy watching the good drivers on the track. Here I hung out at corner 4 and watched how others took this corner. I quickly realized that I'm still very fearful of the wall right here and am still taking it much too slow.

Here is Victor, my instructor today, coming around the corner in his 911SC.

This 964 had a minor off-track excursion between corners 4 and 5 earlier in the day.

This very fast 914-6 belongs to Jason's instructor.

A very nice and fast 928S4.

This 944 appears to need some stiffer springs.

This M3 going through corner 3 seems to have the usual 911 quality of lifting a front wheel off the ground.

One of the very fast and VERY modified Corvette C5s at the track today.

Another Corvette C5.
