Greg's Dark Blue 911

Gingerman Raceway - June 10-11, 2000

Finally back to the track with some warm dry weather. At least Saturday was decent and we were able to get out there and push the cars a little. Sunday started out poorly with light rain off and on. It was just enough to make the track slippery. Since we needed to leave early I still went out and ended up doing a really nice 180 degree spin in turn 6.

This event at Gingerman Raceway was sponsored by PCA Chicago Region but the turnout was surprisingly not too bad. Usually these events are REALLY crowded.

Lily came along again this time driving my 1999 Boxster, Jason driving his new 1997 993, Jeremy in his RS America and Ferdi in his 1996 993 twin turbo. Once again I was driving my 911.

I thought I really did well and pushed the car closer to the limits than ever before. But once I reviewed the Hot Lap times and compared them to my previous results I found my lap times were only slightly faster! This is even when compared to events last year before the suspension work and new tires! How frustrating!

The refreshingly small crowd gathers for the driver meeting.

Our little group of cars ready to go.

There's Ferdi's twin turbo.

Lily did quite well, especially on the second day. Even though the track was wet and very slippery she didn't spin even once. There were quite a few spins when the track was wet.

For some reason I had some trouble with turn 6 this time. In the middle of the day on Saturday I took corner 6 too hot and hit the apex a little too early so not surprisingly I got to the track out point only to find I was quickly running out of track. I tried in vain to get the car to turn sharper but ended up going two wheels off then slowly got back on the track. The picture below shows me turning the steering wheel about 90 degrees which obviously didn't do anything. The video shows the whole sequence of events.

Note the position of the steering wheel.
Here is some in-car video of me taking a lap around Gingerman. This is the lap where I ran out of track at turn 6.

The following video is a much shorter clip showing my error in turn 6 when the track was wet. Wee!! This is fun!

I took a few pictures of people I knew going around the track as well as other cars that looked interesting. I stayed at turn 2 for quite some time on Sunday because that seemed to be a popular place for spins.

Lily going through turn 2 nice and smooth.

Lily being followed by another Boxster.

Ron was doing quite well in his Boxster.

Yet another Boxster.

An interesting 911.

A souped up Camero sliding through the turn.

One of the several twin turbos at this event.

The same one about to pass a Boxster.

A really fast but nearly stock turbo.

And now for something completely different, a lap around Gingerman backwards! Well, not quite, but check it out!
Here is some in-car video of me taking a lap around Gingerman. You've seen many of these on my site but never from this perspective. Just to try something different I pointed my camcorder out my rear window as I took a few fast laps around the track.
