Our last day we had a few hours before our flight to Oahu, and it's been
well over 24 hours since our last dive, so we packed up our stuff and
drove up the mountain to visit Haleakala. It was a nice winding road
and an easy drive, except for the occasional pack of cyclists coasting down
the mountain.
On the way up, we stopped at the visitor center. We saw a pair of Nene,
a endemic goose that also happens to be endangered. They are starting
to come back, but slowly. The other thing we saw was the Ahinahina (Silversword), and endemic plant that only grows in higher elevations. What's interesting
about this plant is it flowers only once when it's about 50 years old, then dies.
