Monkey Jungle : Miami, Florida : Trip Report

Monkey Jungle

"Where the humans are caged and the monkeys run wild"

Do not visit Monkey Jungle without insect repellant. Miami has had a lot rain lately but I've never seen so many mosquitos in my life! Fortunately other guests who knew better were very kind and loaned me their cans to spray ourselves. Ouch!

Anyway, the Monkey Jungle attraction bills itself as a place where monkeys roam free and the humans are in the cage. Well, not quite. When you walk in you do indeed find yourself in a cage most of the time and there are monkeys running around on all sides but mostly above. The reason they're above because that's where they find the suspended baskets on little chains. Guests buy snacks at the entrance then drop food into the baskets. The attentive little monkeys will see that and quickly pull the basket up by the chain and collect their little snacks. It's cute, my daughter loved to feed the monkeys that way. I guess it beats rabies.

The rest of the park was so-so. There were other monkeys that were in cages along with some parrots and lizards. Other odds and ends were several Slots and some Lemurs. Not very exciting. The starts of the shows were the monkeys and apes in the shows. The Howler Monkeys seem to find it most interesting to howl during the presentation on their habits. In our case they stopped howling as soon as the presentation was over. The apes were pretty sad looking but interesting to see. They were one lonely Orangutan and a Lowland Gorilla.
