Patagonia, Chile and Argentina: Trip Report
Jump to:

Patagonia is on almost every list of top hikes in the world but we didn't know much about that part of the world. The original plan was to do the W Trek which is a 5-6 day hike either camping or staying in cabins at designated camp sites. After thinking about it a while and deciding I like hot showers and seeing Melanie's friends pictures from her non-roughing it trip we decided to do the deluxe route instead. Plus I wouldn't have to put up with the whinning and could bring the kids too!!

The general outline of the trip was to fly to Santiago, stay a few hours and do a quick city tour. Then fly down to Punta Arenas, the southern tip of mainland South America. From there go by car a few hours north to a hotel in Torres del Paine National Park where we would do the bulk of the hiking. Then work our way to El Chalten to hike around Mt. Fitzroy a couple days then go to El Calafate to walk on Perito Moreno Glacier.

After that we would head north for warmer weather and spend a couple days at the amazing Iguazu Falls before taking in some culture in Buenos Aires before heading home.

That was a total of 15,263 flight miles, in addition to several long bus rides.
