MAUI DIVING MAUI OCEAN CENTER IOA VALLEY HALEAKALA
MEL'S WEDDING PEARL HARBOR SURFING WAIKIKI

Our last day we had a few hours before our flight to Oahu, and it's been well over 24 hours since our last dive, so we packed up our stuff and drove up the mountain to visit Haleakala. It was a nice winding road and an easy drive, except for the occasional pack of cyclists coasting down the mountain.

On the way up, we stopped at the visitor center. We saw a pair of Nene, a endemic goose that also happens to be endangered. They are starting to come back, but slowly. The other thing we saw was the Ahinahina (Silversword), and endemic plant that only grows in higher elevations. What's interesting about this plant is it flowers only once when it's about 50 years old, then dies.

Here are the Nene hanging out behind the visitor center.

This reads:
The Hawaiian word - ahinahina means grey-grey and was the best description of this attractive plant by a society that did not know metals. The silvery hairs covering the leaves serve as a protection against the harsh rays of the sun just as suntan lotion servers as protection for our skin when we sunbathe. The hairs also act as efficient collectors of moisture from clouds that frequently blanket the summit.

And here is an actual Silversword plant in bloom along the side of the road.

Lily and I walked along the path on the top of the maintain. You can see part of the observatory in the background.
