Whitecap Mountains : Montreal, Wisconsin : Trip Report
| Jump to: |
The mountain (or actually three modest sized hills) was several miles off of Highway 2, the main artery in the area. The road was narrow, hilly and covered in snow and ice. Driving was tricky and needed my full attention. Just finding the resort was tricky as the map on the brochure was just adequate. The sign in front was also tiny so if I didn't see another car pull in I may not have given it a second look.
That seems to be a matter of course at this ski area. The runs are very poorly marked and the map is difficult to read as they try to show both sides of the mountains on one map. We accidentally found ourselves on a black diamond run thinking we were on a blue because the signs were so hard to find and understand.
It was still a good place to warm up. The runs were mostly pretty easy. The one thing that did annoy us a little is that once you get to the area that has the most intermediate runs the only way to get back to the runs that will get you back to the lodge are to take this narrow spur. It's very scenic and all but mostly very flat and parts are slightly uphill. It was impossible to get enough momentum to make it without unstrapping.
