Samaná, Dominican Republic

Samaná in the Dominican Republic is famous for a couple things, being visited by Christopher Columbus in January 1493, being the least spoiled region of the Dominican Republic, and being one of the breeding places of Humpback Whales. Humpback Whales by the thousands migrate to the coast off Samaná from January to March.

Our trip was in late January so we did the Whale Watching excursion. We took a boat out to just outside the bay and waiting for our "turn" to look for Whales. One we got our turn we saw a fin poking out of the water pretty soon but after that the sightings were pretty few and far between.

On the way back we stopped by a nice private beach. Unfortunately our kids don't like beaches and made that opinion abundantly clear so we didn't stay long. We caught the first boat back to the ship to gets the kids back into Kids Club.

Afterwards the girls were exhausted but the guys decided to take a tender to town and walk around. Unfortunately there wasn't that much to see there and the Whale Museum was closed.
