Ah, I also have a 560SEL 1989. It's a very nive car and even though it's aging, no other car really have the appeal of the W126 in my opinion. Today it seems to be more about how much electronic stuff you can stuff into a car instead of craftmanship, engineering, functionality and just basic quality.

The top speed of the 560SEL should be at least 150mph. I've been there with ease and back. Luckily, I had the opportunity to take my 560SEL to Germany with me and see how well it feels at home. And it feel very much at home.

I own a 560SEC...same engine....220kw...and my top speed was exactly 260km/h...and it just stopped there
and since i'm 19 i had to try that:D...and after removing that limiter...it went 290...i just had to start braking..but i believe it might go for 300..i dont think i'm gonna try that..290 is enough
and actually there is an older engine too 5.5litre and its 184kw its a bit more eco..

I OWN A 1988 BLACK ON BLACK MERCEDES 560 SEL. I PURCHASED IT FROM A DOCTOR IN ANAHIEM, CA. IN 1989. HE PURCHASED THE CAR IN GERMANY AND HAD IT SHIPPED TO CALIFORNIA. I FOUND THAT THE ENGINE WOULD START TO FADE AROUND 148 MPH. I FOUND A MERCEDES MECHANIC THAT LEFT THE DEALERSHIP AND OPENED HIS OWN GARAGE. I ASKED HIM ABOUT THE TOP SPEED ON THE CAR. HE SAID THE 560 SEL HAD A GOVENOR INSTALLED IN GERMANY TO GET INTO THE U.S. I ASKED HIM TO REMOVE IT FOR ME. HIS RESPONSE WAS " I'LL LOOSE MY LICIENCE SHOULD IT BE FOUND OUT." AFTER WORKING ON HIM FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, I PICKED IT UP ONE EVENING AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. HE ASKED ME WHEN I WAS GOING TO BE DRIVING SOUTH TO SAN DIEGO ON #15. I TOLD HIM IN A FEW DAYS, AND LEFT. TWO DAYS LATER I TURNED OFF THE #91 FREEWAY OFF RAMP TO #15 SOUTH. I PUT IT TO THE FLOOR AND WAS AT 120 MPH WHEN I MERGED ONTO #15. WITHIN A FEW MORE MINUTES IT FLEW PAST 150 MPH AND BURIED THE NEEDLE. I CALLED HIM ON MY SEL PHONE AND SAID "THANKS"  I'M GLAD I DIDN'T OWN THIS CAR WHEN I WAS 18.

The horsepower Greg states is actually about right for a USA model (strangled by emissions regs). In Europe the same model is rated at 300HP. Mine is a UK 560 SEL (Nautic Blue)

just to let you know, the horsepower is COMPLETELY wrong!!
