Around Vancouver

Vancouver is a gorgeous city. It's right on the Pacific coast on a clear day you can see the snowcapped mountains in the distance. It was late March and already the city was very greeen with blossoming cherry trees.

The first thing we noticed about Vancouver is that it's clean. While walking around the city it was a very rare sight to see any litter or grafitti. However the city seems to be overrun by panhandlers. They seemed to be everywhere. The guide books I used attribute this to the serious drug problem in the city. However that wasn't annoying enough to detract from the city's appeal.

Our first excursion upon arriving in Vancouver was to go with Melanie to Granville Island to stock up for our visit to Whistler. The island is actually a peninsula near downtown which is home to the Granville Market, a large indoor farmer's market. There you can find fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, bakery goods, cheeses and wines. The variety was amazing and everything we bought was excellent and pretty inexpensive.

Yum, lots of seafood.

..and more seafood.

Chinatown

We paid only a very short trip to the old Chinatown near downtown Vancouver. Right next to Chinatown we spent a few minutes visiting Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park. There are actually two parks with a similar name right next to each other. One the nicer private park and the other the free city park. We accidentally found ourselves in the free park (free is always good) and didn't know about the other park until later.

There is a newer "Chinatown" in the suburb of Richmond but it somehow lacks that traditional Chinatown feel. We just stopped in Richland for a quick lunch before our flight back since the town is very close to the airport.

What kind of plant is that?
