Disney-MGM Studios

Another hot day, probably the hottest of the trip. After a early morning swim at the pool we headed to Disney MGM Studios because most of the attractions are indoors so we'd just have to go from one air conditioned attraction to another. The concept behind Disney-MGM Studios is that you're supposed to feel like you're on a movie set. There are fake sets all over the place and actors and directors walk doing shows many times including tourists in game shows in the middle of the street.

Main entrance.

Mickey on a stick.

These guys tried to make visitors do goofy things for the fake camera.

We enjoyed Chopped Salad for lunch at Brown Derby.

The Hollywood Tower of Terror ride.

Ron Stoppable and Kim Possible. No Rufus?

Mickey.

Mann's Chinese Theater.

Fake set of New York.

Al's Toy Barn guarded by a Toy Soldier.

Faux York.

San Fakecisco.

Art deco styled building near the gate.

The Shows

Turns out the two big attractions, the Beauty and the Beast show and the Lights-Motor-Action shows are in large stadiums but at least you sit in the shade. The rest of the attractions are mostly indoors and air conditioned.

Some of the highlights are seeing a show by the Imagination Movers, rising stars on the Disney Channel and of course the two big shows. There are also plenty of places to meet and greet the characters including Mickey, Little Einsteins, JoJo and Goliath, Kim Possible and many others. The one big disappointment was the Chronicles of Narnia show. There we just walked through a "wardrobe" into a big room with snow covered trees and a big screen where they basically just showed a long running preview of the movie then an actress on a ledge above us just recited some of the lines from the movie. Then on the way out there was a sled from the movie and some of the costumes. Not worth waiting in line for.

The Little Mermaid show was much nicer. It also had a screen with projected scenes from the movie but also had live action actors playing some of the parts. There were also some laser light effects but my favorite was when there was splashing water on the screen they would mist water over the audience. Very refreshing especially since we saw the show immediately after standing out in the heat watching the parade.

ABC TV Theater.

Oooh! Imagination Movers are playing.

They put on a good show.

We got to meet them and get autographs after the show.

The Witch.

Otherwise pretty lame.

The sled from the movie.

Beauty and the Beast show.

Elaborate costumes.

My girls especially liked the ultra-pink dresses.

Gaston taking on the Beast.

Everybody lives happily ever after.

The great Voyage of the Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid.

Scenes from the movie projected behind her.

The evil Ursula.

Lame laser effect on the screen.

Lights, Motor, Action stunt show.

The set is made to look like a Paris street.

Lots of burning rubber.

Cars jumping ramps neutralizes the Princesses I've been subjected to all weekend.

This car split in two then it re-attached and drove away.

Herbie makes an appearance.

Much easier seeing it on the big screen.

This guy is going to jump off this tall building.

The pad is right below.

Motorcycles too.

No stunt show is complete without a guy on fire.

Lots of fire in the finale.

The Parade

The last highlight, for my kids at least, was the parade. This one is car themed with all the characters being driven by custom cars decorated to match the character. Even my 2 year old got into it this time waving wildly at her favorite characters.

I just don't get it. Why would anyone want to go to a fake MGM movie studio created by Disney Corp??? The real old time original MGM and Disney studios are still right there in Culver City and Burbank California respectively  The MGM lot dates back to 1919 and the Disney I believe dates to the  the thirties.  I'd rather walk around the outside of the real thing where all those historic movies were made  than go into some phony one where nothing of substance is made but heck you don't have to: The real MGM (now Sony PIctures) even has a tour.

That's It! Go back to the Home Page.
