Greg's Dark Blue 911

Road America - May 27-29, 2000

This Driver's Education event at Road America was sponsored by PCA Chicago Region. This is my first time at this track but the first time with PCA Chicago so I had to go in as a novice. That was fine with me as I could always use more instruction!

Once again much of the weekend was shot due to crappy weather. It was cold and rainy much of Saturday and Sunday. I tried to go out in the rain a couple times but it was just too slippery out there to pick up any decent speed. When it was dry it still took me a while to get up to speed. My instructor gave me a few more tips on a better line, better braking zones and best of all taught me to short shift in a couple spots to set me up for some higher speeds.

By Sunday afternoon it was dry again and I started to pick up some speed. My best lap was 3:08.40 with many laps consistently below 3:10. I know I could still pick up more speed, I just wish the weather was better and I had more time on the track.

I was also surprised how many Boxsters there were at this event. The BMW club event I attended the previous fall didn't allow any convertibles unless they had an SCCA approved roll-bar. Most of the novices were driving Boxsters and many brought the Boxster S. The silver one pictured below was driven by Jason's instructor George. His Boxster S was pretty much stock except for tires and was one of the fastest cars on track. That just proves that skill can make up for a lot less car. I took most of these pictures with the cheaper camcorder so the quality isn't very good.

My car ready to go on the first day.

And Jason with his 993.

And finally a before picture of Ferdi's 993 twin-turbo.

I never realized you can't see any of the motor in the twin turbos.

Finally brought his white Boxter to a track.

Goerge's Boxster S. I don't know why it's up on jack stands.

Turns out dark green does look pretty good on a Boxster S.

And Speed Yellow looks great!

The following pictures of my car were taken by a professional photographer who took shots of everyone's car on the track. These photos are by Edmund Lacis and are posted here with his permission. He can be contacted at PhotobyEdmund@yahoo.com or check out his web page at http://www.dougrippie.com/drm/edmund.htm.

I didn't end up taking a lot of pictures around the track. I was either too busy concentrating on my driving and my car, or it was cold and rainy and I was trying to stay dry and warm.

The novices gather for the first drivers meeting.

The event organizers go over the rules for the weekend.

John shows off his spiffy new custom driving suit.

Caught this shot of Jason passing the start/finish line.

And here he is coming into corner 5.

Jeremy got this shot of me in corner 5 with my other camera.

A set up older 911 going into corner 5.

A 993 Twin Turbo in the hot pit lane.

A 993 Cab, possibly the one that lost it in the kink on Sunday.

My favorite car of the weekend, a fire breathing yellow Turbo S.

I always try to take some in car video when I'm at a track, especially once I'm not very familiar with. I find it very helpful to review some video before I return to the track to remind myself what the layout of the track was like and remind myself what areas I need to work on.
By popular demand, here is some in car video of me taking a lap around Road America. If you download the QuickTime, please be patient, it's very large. It could take over an hour to download over a 33.6K modem. If you're on a slow link I highly recommend viewing the RealVideo version.
QuickTime Movie - Approx. 12.2M
RealVideo - 56K modem or faster stream (3 minutes 20 seconds)

As seems to happen a lot at Road America, several drivers had the misfortune of making contact with a solid surface off the track. The first day a set up race car lost control in corner two and hit the inside wall near the corner worker station. The car was deemed totalled by the owner. On Sunday there were two incidents. The first was a 993 Cab that lost it in the kink and caused major damage to both left and right sides of the car. The second incident involved a 944 in the last corner before the main straight. I don't have any idea what happened there. The following pictures taken by Kurt are of the first car to have an "incident".
