Greg's Dark Blue 911

Road America - September 3-4, 2000

Yet another thrilling Driver Ed event at Road America sponsored by PCA Chicago Region. Once again the weather sucked big time! It was hot and humid in Chicago the day before but the morning of the first day it rained then slowly got cooler and cooler. By the second day the rain was gone but it was pretty cold (high 50's to lower 60's) and VERY windy!

I chose not to get an instructor this time thinking that I already know the line and that I just need to fine tune my driving. Fortunately, the world famous Todd Serota of Tracquest fame was in town for this event to drive Bill's 996. Todd offered to go with me for a couple sessions and give me some pointers. Not only did I beat my previous best lap time but I beat it by over 6 seconds! My best lap time was 3:02.10, with other laps consistently in the 3:04 - 3:06 range on the second day. With another session or two I know I could have gotten below 3:00!!

Our cars ready to go.

Lily looking quite spiffy in her driving suit.

A wider angle shot showing Jason's and Ron's cars.

Lily prepares for her next session.

Lily going over a session with Tony.

Lily naps between sessions in my car. I guess my SRDs are more comfortable than stock Boxster seats.

Ron resting and trying to stay warm.

With 1.5 hours between sessions there was plenty of time to socialize.

Lily, Todd and myself posing for a picture.

The following pictures of my car were taken by a professional photographer who took shots of everyone's car on the track. These photos are by Edmund Lacis and are posted here with his permission. He can be contacted at PhotobyEdmund@yahoo.com or check out his web page at http://www.dougrippie.com/drm/edmund.htm. BTW, the side numbers on my 911 were put on by Lily, not me.

I always try to take some in car video when I'm at a track, especially once I'm not very familiar with. I find it very helpful to review some video before I return to the track to remind myself what the layout of the track was like and remind myself what areas I need to work on.
By popular demand, here is some in car video of me taking a lap around Road America. If you download the QuickTime, please be patient, it's very large. It could take over an hour to download over a 33.6K modem. If you're on a slow link I highly recommend viewing the RealVideo version.
QuickTime Movie - Approx. 10.7M
RealVideo - 56K modem or faster stream (3 minutes 7 seconds)
Since I spent so much time spectating I took some video of cars in the advanced and novice groups. The video below is of some cars going through turns 6, 7 and 8 and into the carousel. The first car you will see is John's white GT3R, then Bill's silver 996, Ron's Boxster and finally Lily in the yellow Boxster. I tried to be as stable as possible but I was pretty high up the hill to get a good view of all the turns and therefor I had to use a lot of zoom.

As seems to happen a lot at Road America, several drivers had the misfortune of making contact with a solid surface off the track. The first car to have a major incident was number 416 pictured below. The second car lost control in turn 12 and supposedly had a pretty hard impact although the damage looked quite minimal. The cars pictured below were far from the only victims of this track. There were a couple other minor dents and scrapes plus a whole lot of cars spun out and went off the track without hitting anything.

Medical staff checking out the driver.

Damage seems just superficial.

The back end got some damage too.

A blurry picture of another incident.

A car off track just past turn 8.

With four run groups there was plenty of time to kill. Most of it was just chatting with track friends but I also spent some time taking pictures of cars on the track. I took a few pictures of Lily on the track as this was her first time at Road America. The rest of the pictures are of people I know or other cars that caught my attention for one reason or another. If you are the owner of one of the cars pictured here please drop me a line and say hi.

This was also the first time I was at Road America where the back parts of the track were open to spectators. I drove from spot to spot to find the ideal vantage point to watch the action. I found the best spot to be at the top of the hill overlooking turns 6, 7, 8 and part of the carousel!
